The 21st Middlesex battalion arrived in France in May, 1916 as part of 121 Brigade, 40th Division and during the following month, after a period of trench instruction, experienced the front line for the first time at Loos. Here they came across the large German trench mortars, minenwerfers or ‘minnies’ as well as all the other perils of trench warfare. According to the Battalion Diary, 21st Middlesex did not enter the front line until 28th June and has no mention of any deaths on 27th June, the day the records show that William Perry and at least three others from the battalion were killed in action. It is likely therefore that they were killed on 28th June but that the date was recorded incorrectly. |
